£10 Million to Eliminate Violence Against Women and Girls

domestic violence lawyer londonThe government announced that it will allocate £10 million for women’s refuges in 100 areas of England. The funds will be available for years 2014 and 2015. This measure is part of a global campaign which is meant to eliminate violence against girls and women and facilitate the prosecution of domestic abuse offenders.

Erick Pickles, the Communities Secretary, addressed all 326 councils of England saying that it is their legal duty to provide shelter for victims of domestic abuse, pointing out that the funds will facilitate specialist refuges to continue saving lives. He further added that victims try to escape for 32 times, on the average, before succeeding.

The Crown Prosecution Service reported that over 74 percent of domestic violence cases are solved and perpetrators are convicted. These results follow other measures taken by the government such as the allocation of £40 million for helplines and the implementation of the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme and Domestic Violence Protection Orders. Measures also include new legislation regarding forced marriage, which is now a crime, and new stalking laws.

The 25th of November is the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. During the following 16 days, the government will make public which local community groups were given grants meant to end female genital mutilation. During this time period, Lynne Feathererstone, the Crime Prevention Minister, will visit King’s College London and Katherine Low Settlement charity, where she will talk openly about domestic abuse and female genital mutilation.

Ever since 2010, the coalition government has funded a total of 15 new rape support facilities all over England. Currently, 84 centres will be receiving government funds until 2016, as another two centres will be open next year. Furthermore, the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) communications insight pack issued by the Home Office was updated to include national statistics and background information on campaign policies of the government.
