Referrals To Children’s Services Increase By Over 10%
Statistics issued by the Department of Education show that during the year 2013 – 2014 referrals to children’s social care in England totaled 657,800 – an increase of 10.8% over the previous year. Data on the source of referrals – collected for the first time – shows that almost 25% of referrals were from the police.
As of March 31st 2014, some 397,600 children were in need – an increase of 5% over the previous year. However, it is stated that the longer-term time series does vary.
In 47.2% of those cases, neglect or abuse was identified as their primary need. This is the most usual primary need, but is followed by family dysfunction at 18.6% of cases which is approximately the same as the previous year.
In the year 2013 – 2014, 142,500 Section 47 enquiries were carried out – an increase of 12.1% on the March 2012 – 2013 figure.
48,300 children were subjects of a child protection plan at March 31st 2014, an increase of 12.1% since March 31st 2013, and an increase of 23.5% since March 31st 2010.
