Our team of solicitors have over 30 years’ experience representing clients of all backgrounds in all family and child law matters

As of 2010 Children’s Rights has been placed firmly in the spotlight; with the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) specifically working to put laws in place that would give children from disadvantaged communities throughout the UK a voice. Despite the UK Governments initial commitment to make the necessary changes there are still huge areas that are a major concern and particularly that of child poverty in the UK. Another issue that the committee has brought to the fore is the recent changes that have been implemented in the legal aid provision whereby children are barred from making a direct petition to the UN Committee as requested by the UNCRC.

These changes are seen as a direct discrimination against children’s rights and there is a recommendation that the only solution would be for the Government to follow suite in the practices implemented by Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, whereby the Office of the Children’s Commissioner has been granted the resources and powers to examine individual cases and make recommendations directly to the UN Committee on these children’s behalf.

If action is not taken by the new Government to undo the new changes it could be a blemish on the UK Government’s ability to solve human rights issues and particularly those involving children.
