Ministry of Justice announces more Government funding for free mediation
Mediation sessions will be free to both parties if one party is already legally aided, according to a new announcement by the Ministry of Justice. This is the latest stage in a series of family justice reforms being implemented according to recommendations by the Mediation Task Force.
At present mediation sessions are free only for the legally aided party. The other member of the couple must bare the cost, which may deter the couple from using mediation. As part of the new changes mediation sessions will be Government funded entirely if one party is legally aided.

The Government is also taking forward several other recommendations, including:
- An experts advisory group tasked with improving practice and focussing mediation on achieving the best outcomes for children involved, if any;
- Examining options to reform management in the mediation sector;
- Reviewing LAA (Legal Aid Agency) contracts made with mediation providers in order to improve services; and
- Further expanding the current campaign to increase awareness of mediation and the availability of legal help and legal aid for mediation.
